Legal Services of Northwest Jersey, Inc. is a non-profit law firm offering legal counsel, advice and representation in civil matters to low-income individuals who reside in Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren Counties.

Specific areas of the law in which representation is offered include the following:

• Family law--including divorce, custody, certain child support cases, domestic abuse and legal assistance to parents facing DYFS intervention
• Housing law--including tenancy matters, eviction, public housing benefits, homeownership issues such as foreclosure and predatory lending
• Public benefits--such as SSI, TANF, Food Stamps, Medicaid and General Assistance
• Consumer law--dealing with wage garnishment, bank account levies, automobile repossession, lawsuits for collection of debts, debt collection harassment, Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy
• Matters dealing with individual rights--such as education, worker's rights, health care access and autonomy issues (powers of attorney, wills, advanced health care directives, and mental health matters).

Special Projects

Tenancy Project
LSNWJ attorneys appear in tenancy court each week. The judge announces from the bench that LSNWJ is available to provide advice and representation to financially eligible tenants who face eviction. Although LSNWJ is able to provide representation to tenants who appear in court without representation, LSNWJ encourages tenants who are served with a complaint for eviction to contact the office before the court date.

Senior Legal Assistance
In cooperation with the various County Offices on Aging, LSNWJ provides legal advice, representation, and preparation of legal documents for people age 60 or older. There are no financial eligibility requirements for the Senior Legal Assistance Projects, however, the projects target the frail and vulnerable, minorities and impoverished.
